Another year has come and gone. Many people are celebrating their wins for 2023. Their highlight reels feature awards and achievements, victories and viral episodes. All fine things - congratulations!
But over time, I've come to value progress over a performance, momentum more than a moment. There's nothing sacred about the calendar year. Life goes on. What matters is intentional growth - moving toward the life you want.
What do you wish to change? Where is there a gap between the current and ideal state in your life?
1. It may be a professional interest.
In March, I decided to learn more about venture capital. I spent many hours reading blogs and watching videos. I looked into venture scout programs. I leaned into my strengths while exploring the unfamiliar.
Looking back, I can see real, tangible progress the past 9 months. Today I get pretty interesting deal flow. I have a keener sense for what VCs want. And I have a growing network of founders and investors.
These days you can learn about and get involved in almost anything. Often it doesn't even cost money. It just takes time and dedication. Seek out what you want. Put in the work. Knock on enough doors and one will open. Nobody will spoon-feed it to you. But if you're motivated, nobody can stop you either.
2. It may be a major life decision.
In June, I decided to move closer to my parents. The idea had been in the back of my mind for a while. But a few recent triggers accelerated my timeline. I looked at all the work I would need to do, all the steps I would need to coordinate, all the expenses I would need to pay. At first, it felt overwhelming.
Bit by bit things came together. Not without delays and complications. But eventually, the problems were resolved. The path forward opened. I haven't exactly arrived, but I'm en route to my destination.
Some things just need to be done. You must set them in motion sooner or later. If you don't take the plunge - make the hard decisions and engage in the work - you'll be in the same place 6 months later.
3. It may be another personal goal.
In 2024, my plan is to become involved in more social activities. Go out and meet new people. Get into a relationship. Ever since the pandemic, I've refrained from most social outings. That's going to change.
Your goal may be in health or fitness, music or finance or spirituality. You may want to pick up a new hobby or revisit one you used to enjoy. Whatever the case, start taking steps in that direction.
You don't need to have arrived. You don't need to be approaching the finish line. You might not even see it on the horizon. But if you are moving closer to the life you desire - even if you're inching your way there, even if nobody else takes notice - I'd say that's worth celebrating.
